Everybody struggles with that last 10% of repair. So today, I'm gonna share two exercises you can practise at home that will help you improve your accuracy and achieve a really clean finish. Stay tuned!

Exercise 1: Finding and Lifting Micro Lows

I've secured a bonnet panel to a stand, and I’m starting by creating a very small dent. To make the dent as tiny as possible while still visible on my line board, I’m using a sharp tap-down and a hammer. This simulates a micro low, which is often what remains at the end of a repair.

With my S-hook and O-ring positioned underneath the bonnet panel, I insert my double bend bar with a screw tip. The tip is bare metal but fairly rounded. The key here is to practise moving the tool tip carefully and accurately until I’m confident it’s positioned correctly. Since the dent is so small, my focus is on hitting the exact centre.

This exercise is all about accuracy—getting consistent at placing the tool tip precisely in the low and applying just enough pressure to lift the dent without creating a high spot.

Exercise 2: Tapping Down Micro Highs

Now, we move on to the second part of this exercise—tapping down a micro high. I’ve added a couple of layers of tape to my tool tip and, once again, using the S-hook and O-ring, I apply slight pressure underneath the panel to create a small high spot.

You can see the high spot forming as the lines on the board pinch together. I then add just a little more pressure to peak the high spot while keeping it visible on the board. My goal is to create the smallest high spot possible while still being able to detect it during the repair.

Using a knockdown tool, I aim directly at the peak of the high spot and begin with gentle taps to reverse the impact. The goal is to make all the lines read through cleanly, ensuring that the repair blends seamlessly.

The Key to Perfect PDR Finishing

Practise makes perfect. Repeat these exercises multiple times until you can consistently find your tool tip, lift micro lows, and tap down micro highs with accuracy. If you master these skills, your PDR work will improve dramatically.

By understanding these crucial finishing techniques, you’ll develop the skills needed to achieve a flawless repair every time.
